What happens when AI becomes a tool for understanding the fundamental questions of science?

During the AI4SD mini conference at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, we sat down with Prof Laura Baciou (Research Director at the French National Scientific Research Center of the University Paris-Saclay) and Dr. Misaki Ozawa, (Researcher at the French National Scientific Research Center of Grenoble Alpes University to discuss how AI is changing scientific research and what this means for the future.

In this conversation, Prof. Laura Baciou shares how AI is helping her investigate complex biological systems and proteins that are difficult to study experimentally — with potential implications for drug discovery and healthcare.

We also speak with Dr. Misaki Ozawa, a physicist working at the intersection of physics and machine learning. He explains why AI isn’t magic, what we really mean when we call AI a “black box,” and how ideas from physics can help us understand and develop new machine-learning approaches.

The conversation goes beyond the technology itself. We discuss:

  • How AI is transforming scientific research
  • AI’s potential in healthcare, agriculture, education and energy
  • Why collaboration between Ghana and France matters for AI research
  • How AI and LLMs could change learning for students
  • What researchers can — and cannot — predict about the future of AI
  • Why young people should take the initiative and start building with AI now

One message comes through clearly: you don’t have to be a computer scientist to work with AI.

AI is becoming a tool for scientists, researchers, students and professionals across disciplines — and the next generation has an opportunity to shape where it goes.
