African VC ecosystem does not actually exist: Sewu-Steve Tawia on the brutal realities of funding African startups

Venture capital is often sold to founders as a straightforward growth engine: raise a check, scale rapidly, and build a unicorn. But the unvarnished mathematical reality inside the portfolio tells a completely different story.

In a candid interview, Sewu-Steve Tawia challenges one of the most common assumptions about startup funding in Africa. He argues that the continent does not yet have a true venture capital ecosystem, pointing out that more than 70% of the capital invested in African startups comes from international investors. Akofresh secures $100,000 OPEC Fund Youth Entrepreneurship Award for tackling post-harvest losses

Ghanaian agtech innovator AkoFresh has been named the grand winner of the 2026 OPEC Fund Youth Entrepreneurship Award at the OPEC Fund Development Forum. Founded by Mathias Charles Yabe, the startup tackles post-harvest waste by deploying solar-powered cold storage facilities, refrigerated transit, and direct market-linkage tools for smallholder farmers. The $100,000 cash prize will be used to expand their cold-chain footprint across regional agricultural hubs.

West African Feeds bags $20,000 as part of the grand winners of the JumpShot Innovation Challenge

Agribusiness venture West African Feeds secured a fourth-place finish at the high-intensity NBPA–UM6P Innovation Challenge, bringing home $20,000 in non-dilutive funding. Powered by StartGate at UM6P Benguerir in Morocco, the JumpShot 2.0 program partnered with the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), bringing a delegation of 32 NBA players to build new funding bridges between African founders and the United States venture capital landscape.

DercolBags Packaging secures funding from Acumen Angels

Eco-friendly manufacturing venture DercolBags Packaging has secured fresh funding after being selected as one of the latest Acumen Angels awardees. The capital injection will help the company to build their WatPak digital platform that connects waste collectors, recyclers, and businesses within a circular packaging ecosystem.

UCC’s Dr. Moore secures compute grants from AI Skills and Compute Africa

Dr. Stephen Moore of the University of Cape Coast has secured a critical infrastructure grant to power local language AI development. Moore is building a massive 500+ hour parallel speech corpus and recognition benchmark across Twi, Ga, Ewe, Dagbani, and Fante. Backed by a high-performance H200 GPU deployed over 24 weeks, the initiative brings voice-technology out of the lab to ensure automated digital healthcare and financial tools can seamlessly communicate with everyday citizens in their native dialects

Ex-LocalGlobe partner Yvonne Bajela secures funding from British Business Bank and Bootstrap 4F for new fund

British-Ghanaian investor Yvonne Bajela has secured commitments from the British Business Bank and Bootstrap Europe for EverTrue Capital, her newly launched pre-seed venture fund.

Bajela, formerly a partner at LocalGlobe, has backed companies including Wise, Moove, and Marshmallow. Her investment career spans Goldman Sachs, Mitsui, Impact X Capital, and LocalGlobe, where she built a track record investing in early-stage technology startups.

EverTrue Capital is a founder-first fund focused on backing exceptional entrepreneurs at the earliest stages of company building.

Ex-GIZ AI Advisor Elikplim Sabblah joins African Center for Economic Transformation

Following a four-year tenure as Technical Advisor for GIZ’s FAIR Forward initiative—where he contributed heavily to drafting Ghana’s National AI Strategy and the Ghana AI Practitioners’ Guide—Elikplim Sabblah has transitioned to a continental role. He has joined the African Center for Economic Transformation as Technical Lead and AI Policy Consultant to head the African AI Policy Compass, a new policy tool designed to guide African governments in building contextually grounded, inclusive AI governance frameworks.

Lyon Agro and Crux Global shortlisted for the 2026 Africa’s Business Heroes competition

The Jack Ma Foundation has unveiled its 2026 shortlist for the Africa’s Business Heroes (ABH) prize competition. Representing Ghana on the continental stage this year are Lyon Agro, the commodites aggregator and digital creative agency Crux Global, both advancing to the next phases of pitching for a share of the $1.5 million grant pool.
