German philanthropic VC firm fair equity has invested in Legendary Foods Africa, the Ghanaian startup producing alternative protein from palm weevil larvae. The firm announced the transaction on LinkedIn. The investment amount was disclosed.

The announcement also named Obudu Capital and the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation as partners in the transaction. Obudu Capital lists Legendary Foods Africa in its portfolio, suggesting the gender-lens investment firm also backed the company.

Founded by Shobhita Soor, Legendary Foods develops consumer products and industrial ingredients from palm larvae protein. The startup sells cookies, a chilli condiment and palm larvae powder through formal and informal retail channels. It is also expanding its business-to-business offering, supplying food manufacturers with a locally produced alternative to imported protein ingredients.

The company initially relied on smallholder farmers to raise the larvae, but coordinating production across multiple suppliers created logistical and quality-control challenges. Legendary Foods has since centralised production at its vertical farm in Kumasi, where it breeds the larvae under controlled conditions. The approach allows the company to produce larvae year-round without relying on traditional harvesting methods, which often involve felling palm trees.

Earlier this year, Ghana Innovation Journal reported that Legendary Foods secured follow-on funding from the Africa Business Angels Network. The startup has a number of tier 1 Africa investors on its cap table including Launch Africa Ventures, Baylis Emerging Markets and Climate Resilient Africa Fund.
