Deep Dive: SmithField Agribusiness secures $230,000 from GBHub Africa to expand cold storage network.
GBHub Africa, the impact venture arm of the FCMG conglomerate GBFoods Africa has injected $230,000 into SmithField Agribusiness. SmithField Agribusiness aggregates vegetables and connects smallholder farmers to retail and institutional markets. At the core of SmithField’s model is a network of solar powered cold rooms that enable the company to aggregate, store, and distribute fresh produce while reducing post harvest losses and maintaining quality across the supply chain.
The cedi-denominated convertible debt facility will enable the company to expand its cold chain infrastructure, grow its network of smallholder farmers, and strengthen its operations.
Accelerator & Incubator
Seven startups advance to the incubation phase of the MEST AI Startup Programme.
The MEST AI Startup Program has selected seven ventures to advance from its training phase into incubation, following seven months of product development, customer validation and business training.
The selected startups span food and health, data infrastructure, financial compliance, maternal healthcare, mobility, agriculture and AI infrastructure.
Orange Corners Ghana select 16 businesses for its acceleration programme.
Orange Corners Ghana has selected 16 entrepreneurs for Cohort 13 of its flagship entrepreneurship programme. The new cohort includes Chale App, an event discovery platform helping users find and engage with events; Nikasemo Technologies, an edtech company developing solutions for education; DrugNet, a healthtech venture focused on improving access to medicines; and Ecovon, a circular economy venture converting waste into building materials.
The cohort will spend the next six months in an acceleration programme implemented by GrowthAfrica, receiving mentorship, business support, strategic connections, and access to funding opportunities.
Crux Global shortlisted as 2026 Africa’s Business Heroes Top 20 finalists.
Ghanaian creative economy company Crux Global has been selected among the Top 20 finalists for the 2026 Africa’s Business Heroes competition. Founded by Rodney Kofi Kyei, Crux Global is a media and entertainment company that supports African creatives with strategy, music, distribution, and access to international markets.
The Top 20 represent 12 African countries and will pitch at the ABH Semi-Final in Nairobi on August 21–22, with 10 entrepreneurs advancing to the Grand Finale to compete for a share of the US$1.5 million prize pool.
Ex. KIC Programs Manager Ato Ulzen-Appiah joins Academic City University
Former Kosmos Innovation Center Programs Manager Ato Ulzen-Appiah has joined Academic City University as Director of Entrepreneurship & Innovation Ecosystem. At Academic City, Ato will lead efforts to strengthen the university’s entrepreneurship ecosystem, foster innovation, and support the next generation of founders.
Funding
DIPPER Lab gets funding to scale AI powered cropping calendar advisory platform for famers.
KNUST’s DIPPER Lab has secured funding from the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT under the CGIAR Sustainable Farming Programme. The funding will support the DIPPER Lab to upgrade the Cropping Calendar Agroadvisory Platform. The lab will integrate its Smart Indigenous Weather App into the platform and add AI analytics to use weather and other data to provide farmers with more accurate, location-specific advice on what to plant and when.
Partnerships
Xpress Gas partners Polygon Energy Technology Corporation to modernize its gas cylinder circulation model.
Xpress Gas, the LPG distribution company has partnered with Polygon Energy Technology Corporation to deploy IoT-enabled solutions across its LPG cylinder distribution operations. The solutions include cylinder tracking, smart valves using RFID, QR codes and barcodes, as well as intelligent refilling dispensers and smart scales for households and businesses to monitor gas levels.
The partnership also includes the development of AI systems through Polygon’s SaaS platform to support cylinder distribution across Ghana. The technologies are expected to improve customer service, strengthen cylinder management, and support efforts to increase LPG access across the country.
Policy
Ghana Hubs Network pushes for dormant funds to close Ghana’s startup funding gap.
The Ghana Hubs Network wants the government to put part of Ghana’s dormant funds behind startups and early-stage businesses, arguing that the money could help address one of the ecosystem’s most persistent problems i.e the lack of capital available before a startup becomes investable.
The call comes as the Ministry of Finance develops a framework for putting dormant funds to productive use while preserving the rights of account holders to reclaim their assets.
The network is proposing a Dormant Assets Innovation and Enterprise Fund. The proposed fund would provide pre-seed grants for prototype and MVP development, support the commercialisation of university and research-based innovations, and provide targeted funding for women and young entrepreneurs.
